A massive day on course with the 2021 AVG Watts PGA Legends Pro Am being played.
Over 60 pros took to our fairways over the day, along with a number of members and sponsors.
The fantastic day of golf was followed by an amazing dinner prepared by our chefs and presentations.

Unfortunately the $30,000 Yarra Valley Toyota hole in one didn’t go off on the 7th, but congratulations to Glen Callaway for knocking one 186cm away on the 16th to take out the Fujitsu/MMAS reverse cycle split system air conditioning system.

Our morning amateur winner with an amazing 45pts was Tim Johnston. Great effort with a 13hcp.

Afternoon team winners were Neil, Michael and Blake from our great sponsors AON, with a massive team score of 101pts, 7pts clear of 2nd place!

And in the main event, an amazing 6 under from David McKenzie won the day, 1 shot ahead of Simon Tooman (-5) in second place, and last years winner Grant Fyander (-4) in third place.

A huge thanks to Rick and his team for presenting the course in probably the best condition it’s ever been. To AVG Watts, Fletchers Mooroolbark, Yarra Valley Toyota and every single sponsor in today’s event, days like today can’t happen without you, so thanks for your support.

Pennant Round 2 Results

Pennant Round 2 Results

Men’s Pennant 2021 – Round 2: February 28 – versus Bacchus Marsh GC at Cheltenham Golf Club

For round 2 of the pennant season the team headed into Melbourne’s iconic “Sand Belt” to Cheltenham Golf Club. Cheltenham is a public 9-hole course in the shadows of the grand club house of Victoria Golf Club. While not long the course has plenty of tricky holes that require some decisions about club selection and landing areas.

On a beautiful late summer’s day our team reversed last year’s close loss to record its first “W” for the season – 4 to 3 – against Bacchus Marsh.

Andrew Roberts, back in the line-up this round, recorded the first point – with a convincing win, 4 & 3. He was in control from early in the match and despite a fight-back from his opponent he finished his work on the 15th. His next challenge will be taking on Todd Patton in the semis of the Match Play Championship.

Our #1, Russell Hughes, also recorded a comfortable win – 7 & 6. A very different day from last year where he won on the 19th hole. He then had the luxury of supporting his teammates who still had matches in the balance.

At #3, Paul Thompson, had his customary slow start – again no thanks to a dodgy lie and a 130 metre grubber by his opponent to less than 2 metres, on the tricky 3rd hole. A bounce-back win on the following very scary par 3 had him back in the game. He was never headed again and a brilliant 6-iron to the 17th and a nerveless “up and down” sealed his win – 2 & 1.

Skipper Brenton Derix and his brother Jeremy Derix were both on the wrong end of 1 & 2 losses. Both matches were tight, but as often happens in Match Play a few breaks going the wrong way at the wrong time don’t help. They will both be looking for comeback victories on the open Ranfurlie layout in our next outing.

With 2 live matches we still needed another point to clinch the win. Dale Edwards was also in a very tight match and despite being down early in the afternoon the match was all square on the 18th. Dale handled the pressure situation better than his opponent and took the victory – 1 up. Congrats to Dale on his first pennant victory for the club.

Jack Briggs was also in an arm-wrestle throughout the afternoon and after 18 holes no result. Hence a walk back to the 1st to keep playing. Unfortunately, his drive on the 20th put him out of position and his opponent took advantage to record the victory.

With 1 win and 1 loss the team sits in 5th place, only just behind our next opponent – Green Acres. A week’s break before our next match.

Next Match:  Sunday 14 March – 12:10 am at Ranfurlie Golf Club versus Green Acres GC.

Colt’s Pennant 2021 – Round 2: February 28 – versus Settlers Run at Eastwood Golf Club

The Colts Team were fortunate to have another local venue – at Eastwood Golf Club – for their 2nd round match.  This week they took on the powerful Settlers Run outfit.

At the halfway-mark the match was very tight – 2 matches square, 2 down (only by 1 in each) and 1 up.  Unfortunately, the Settlers team came home stronger and recorded a 4 to 1 win.

The highlight of the morning’s play was a very convincing win by our #1, Charley Smith – 8 & 7.
Charley’s game is really coming along strongly, and he will have plenty of opportunities to hone his considerable skills playing at #1.

Congrats to Charlie Lawson, playing his first pennant match for the Club.  He started well against a more experienced opponent and kept fighting, but ultimately recorded a 2 & 3 loss.

Dan Scholz, Jordan Irish and Zac Horsey were not able to convert their solid first 9’s into wins.

With the up-coming long week-end, followed by a bye (there are 9 teams and only 7 rounds) the Colts have a couple of weeks to practice their short games and straight hitting – ready for their next match at the tight and tricky Box Hill course.

Next Match:  Sunday 21 March – 8:20 am at Box Hill Golf Club versus Patterson River GC

2020/21 Bowls Club Champions

2020/21 Bowls Club Champions

Congratulations to our 2020/21 Club Champions Inez McCabe and Adam Patrick.  And congratulations to Runners-up Marlyn Williams and John Davies, who along with Inez & Adam, helped provide the gallery of club members with an enjoyable and entertaining  game of bowls.

No glaring sun and very little breeze set the scene for a perfect morning for bowling followed by a sausage sizzle which all added up to a pleasant way to spend Sunday morning.

Thanks to Michelle Wilson and Bruce Aumann for marking and to the members who helped organise the day.

Men’s Pennant 2021 – Round 1: February 21 – versus Settlers Run at Green Acres Golf Club

The timing of the start of the 2021 season was perfect – avoiding the snap lock-down of the week before. So, with a long list of COVID “Do’s and Don’ts” the Men’s Pennant Team found themselves back at the picturesque Green Acres Golf Club in East Kew.
Our new Team Manager, Nunz Mantini dealt with all the red tape and managed to get all the players and caddies organized and at the course ready for the start of the season. Our opponent was again Settlers Run who have a very experienced squad.
Unfortunately, we did not get the “W”, but not without a mighty effort – going down 3 to 4, with the deciding
match going to the 18th hole. The post-match review was much different to last year when we did not manage to win a single match.
Well done to the team who can now approach next week with plenty of confidence.

Jeremy Derix recorded our first point of the year with a very solid 4 & 2 win playing at the number 5 spot. He has been in good form during the pre-season and took that form into Sunday’s match.
Despite a slow start, thanks to a couple of ordinary lies, Paul Thompson did not take long to bounce back and was 1 up at the turn. Winning 3 holes in a row early in the second 9 gave him a handy buffer, enabling him to
control the match for a 4 and 2 win in the tough #3 spot.
Also recording a gutsy win, in the #1 spot was Russell Hughes who used plenty of guile and skill to keep the pressure on his opponent. The 17th hole (8th on the card) has a natural grandstand, and Russell had plenty of eyes on him to record a gutsy par to seal the match.
Our debutants, Dale Edwards and Jack Briggs faced a couple of red-hot opponents who both had a day out, recording below par scores. A tough initiation on their first matches for Gardiners Run, on a trickly layout.
Shane Densley played solidly but did not get the breaks when he needed them. As you all know, in MatchPlay the difference between the players can come done to just a couple of good bounces and a bit of lady luck.
Thanks to Jonathan Baker and Andrew Roberts, the unlucky squad members not in the round one team, for caddying for their teammates. Thanks also to the caddies, Barbara, John T and Wardy for coming out to support the team.
Next Match: Sunday 28 February – 11:40 am at Cheltenham Golf Club versus Bacchus Marsh GC.

Colt’s Pennant 2021 – Round 1: February 21 – versus Rossdale at Heritage Golf Club

For just the second time at Gardiners Run, we are fielding a Colts (under 24) Pennant Team. Round 1 saw the team take a quick trip to our, almost, neighbours – the Heritage Golf Club.
Team Manager, Rob Scholz has done a great job putting together the team, a tricky proposition given the commitments to cricket and other sports for several of the squad members.

In a score-line to be near repeated in the Men’s Competition they again fell short by one match, which went to the 18th hole. The final score line was a narrow loss 2 to 3.
Zac Horsey, in the first group recorded a very impressive 4 & 3 win to get the first point of the year for his team.
Playing at the #2 spot, Dan Scholz continued his big weekend in sport with a 3 & 1 win after a tight match. The day before he scored 105 not out playing for Richmond in Premier Cricket. Given that he is young and fit he probably went for a run after his match on Sunday?

In the other matches Nathan Lester and Jordan Irish fought gamely all day to record narrow losses, while skipper Charley Smith at #1 spot came across a tough opponent.
It was great to see some Dad’s out supporting their sons, some travelling quite a distance from home to the Heritage.
Any members not playing on Sunday would be welcome to support our team across at Eastwood.

Next Match: Sunday 28 February – 7:30 am at Eastwood Golf Club versus Settlers Run GC
