Chirnside Park Country Club is located
one kilometre off Maroondah Highway and five kilometres West of
Lilydale at the Gateway to the Yarra Valley. Chirnside Park and
Country Club Estate was originally part of the Shire of Lillydale,
however it was renamed and given its own postcode in the early
1970’s.
Chirnside Park Country Club and it's sister, Clifton Springs,
were developed following research into Estates such as North Palm
Beach in Florida, Bel Air in Beverley Hills and The Pymble Club
near Sydney. The Estate Agents and Developers responsible were
Willmore and Randell P/L and Community Centres P/L, from whom
the Golf Course and all associated facilities were purchased in
1974.
The name Chirnside Park is in honour of George Chirnside who
owned the property from 1921 until his death in 1940. George Chirnside’s
uncle, Thomas Chirnside, was one of Australia’s most significant
land-owners, his major holding being at Werribee, where his mansion
at Werribee Park remains a major tourist attraction.
The “legendary” Sam Berriman who designed Horsham,
Huntingdale, Keysborough and Sale Golf Courses designed the original
par 73 layout. Six holes have been altered over a period of time,
the present course is a par 71 with an A.C.R. of 71.
The course was originally a nine hole public course (1966/67)
with the grand residence of Chirnside being used as a sales office
for the real estate agents. The second nine holes were developed
as the final releases of real estate were sold.
The developers also constructed Tennis Courts as part of the
Country Club theme but it was not until 1984, after the Club had
purchased the facilities, that the first 8x8 Bowls Rink was constructed.
The Club now boasts 6 Tennis Courts and two competition standard
Lawn Bowling Greens with a purpose built Bowls Pavilion.
Chirnside was somewhat of an experiment in its formative years
in that it attempted to develop the family unit as its membership
basis and residents of the estate were given preferential treatment
when they applied for membership. As with many Clubs at the time
management was largely by committee and working bees were the
main method of getting things done. The Club now gathers its members
from far and wide and employs professional management for the
Clubs facilities that now include a gaming room and a fully licensed
Bistro and Function centre.
We still have a strong family atmosphere and our commitment to
the development of young sports people has encouraged several
clubs throughout Australia to adopt our junior programs.
